Membership within the church is something that the Holy Spirit gives and the Church recognizes.
If you are a follower of Jesus then you automatically become part of his people – the church!
Ultimately the church is called to be a community of grace – a fellowship and an opportunity to give and receive grace, to and from other people.
Within this movement we learn to become more like God the Father Son and Holy Spirit, in whose image we are made!
There are some wonderful descriptions in the New Testament about the nature of the Church, and our participation in it, including:
A body – ‘Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.’
(1 Corinthians 12:27)
A Temple –‘you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 2:4-5)
A Kingdom – ‘To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father – to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.’ (Revelation 1:5-6)
Branches – ‘I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing’ (John 15:5)
A Family – ‘to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God (John 1:12)
Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters. (Hebrews 13:1)
These various descriptions underscore a core teaching of the Bible:
that through our faith in Jesus we are called into a new relationship not only with God but also with each other.
Jesus calls us to hear his words and put them into practice (Matthew 7:24).
At SDP all people who call our church home are part of the family, and we want to welcome you fully into the journey of fellowship with us!
